My Current Plan:

For a number of years now I have been struggling to get anything completed. This is because I stopped writing short stories and attempted to write novels. The problem is that I am a slow writer, and I can sometimes go a week between writing sessions. This meant that it took me a long time to not to get very far, and in the end I would lose interest in the project, and what was clear in the beginning would become distant. I need to increase my writing discipline, and I think the way to do this is to go back to short stories.

Short stories are short, obviously, so they are quicker to write, and in doing so I should regain my confidence in seeing a project through to completion. I’ll also gain more experience in all areas of story writing (Beginning, Middle and End) plus editing, which will help me when I can return to novel writing. My inclination does tend towards longer works, and even the short story I am currently writing is going at a more novel like pace (which I will need to edit later). To fix this I am going to read as many short stories as I can, so that I can absorb the form. I used to read a lot of short fiction when I was traveling on the train to university. This was mainly SF and Crime, specifically Aisaac Asimovs, Analog, Alfred Hitchcock and Ellery Queen, but since then I have slowly built quite a collection of fantasy / sf / and horror magazines and anthologies.

I am still struggling with writing every day. My wordcount per sitting session has increased, but I still often go a week without putting pen to paper. I need to start writing daily – tomorrow morning I will try once more to start a writing routine. Once I can achieve that I know that everything else will fall into place, that my output will increase, and due to this, I will start getting some more acceptances.

Wish me luck :)

An update

I am currently working on a short story with the working title of ‘Obsession De Art’. I’m sure that title will probably change, but it will do for now. When I came up with the idea it was planned to be a short story, but then, as what often happens with me at least, the idea grew. I planned and started it as a novel, but I had only completed a few pages before circumstances and a lack of writing discipline caused the project to fall by the wayside. After another lengthy break from writing, I was determined to try again, but I couldn’t think of anything to write about, so I decided to reduce the novel back to my original short story idea and start again. I have written 2019 words so far, and there is still quite a bit to go. I have a feeling that it may end up being a bit long, but I am not worrying myself with that at the moment, as I just want to finish the first draft. I can cut and condense later.

You may have noticed that this website has gone through yet another revamp. I think I am finally happy with this  one and am looking forward to building it up over time.  I am aiming for one major update per week, plus minor check-ins and word count listings every couple of days. I hope that you find it interesting.

Adam.

Before we start I thought I would tell you a little bit about myself, and what this blog is going to be about.

This is my standard bio:

Adam Wieland was born on Easter Sunday, 1981, in Rockingham, Western Australia. Adam writes mainly in the Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror genres. He completed a Media Studies degree at Edith Cowan University in 2002. One of his short stories, “The Border” was published online by “The Murder Hole” E-Zine the same year. Since then he has had a story published in Shadowed Realms that was nominated for a Tin Duck (for best West-Australian speculative fiction) and a story in the first issue of ‘Short Stories Australia’ magazine. Last year he released a chapbook of his first chapbook of poetry, ‘A Medley.’

This blog is the most important of my many ‘homes’ on the web, for this is where I intend to write and post the most content. This blog will cover a number of areas:

1) My Work – Which will consist of updates and the latest news, plus the struggles and successes of being a writer. Interesting reading for other writers and for readers as I document my works-in-progress on a fairly regular basis. Word counts. Problems etc

2) Reviews – Books, Film, Music. Hopefully I can introduce you to something or someone that adds to your life.

3) Thoughts on writing / book industry

And more. It is hard at this early stage to say what this blog is going to become, and I don’t want to limit it to the above and nothing else. All I hope is that you find it both interesting and enjoyable enough to return to on a regular basis, and maybe, if you haven’t already done so, more inclined to seek out and read my work. Please feel free to comment on my posts

Regards,

Adam Wieland
